| Natchitoches is the
oldest permanent settlement in Louisiana. A blending of colonial French and Spanish
cultures makes it "The New Orleans of North Louisiana," a melting pot of
diversity and charm. Founded in 1714 by Louis Juchereau De St. Denis, the city of Natchitoches was originally established as an outpost on the Red River to facilitate trade with the Spanish in Mexico. This site was selected on the West bank of the Red river near a village of Natchitoches Indians, a tribe whose name means "Chinquapin-Eaters". |
